Day 24 - The Road Twice Travelled - Sanremo

Well the road was still closed so we had to traverse back the way we came, it was still narrow and twisty but at least we knew what was coming. Not far from the hotel we came across another French car that was asking directions, not the car of course, there was gaggle of Italians all pointing and gesticulating what road to take, so off it went and we followed. We got about 50 metres and the French car is backing up towards us seems there was car coming the other way. So we both back down to the junction and let the car come through then off we go again, same 50 metres same French car backing towards us, down we go again, meanwhile the Italian spectators think this is all immensely funny, a thousand curses on their pizzas. Third time of asking we made good progress for a few kilometres then we met two cars coming the other way and it was all stop. Penny got out to see around the corner reporting back that the French car was slowly manoeuvring around the oncomers, I managed to back up about 10 metres to a patch of road that was wider and the situation was solved. We never saw the French car or the laughing Italians again......

We were able to stop a couple of times to admire the view and very nice it was. Once we came across what looked like a home made funicular railway which started at the road side and dropped straight down the hill, it all looked very unconvincing but turns out we ended up seeing quite few as the farmers use them to help cultivate the hill sides, not sure I would want to go backwards down the hill though.

Eventually we made the highway and stopped for a strong coffee that was needed to calm the nerves. Along the way we turned off to see S. Bartolomeo Al Mare, Barts by the Sea, obviously a holiday resort mainly we suspect for Italians, it had a funny Blackpool feel about it without the tower.

Arrived in Sanremo and booked into the hotel and literally a room with a view, fantastic. The marina was host to a fine number of medium to large motor yachts including The Hermitage which we googled and found out belonged to a Russian oligarch, over 250 ft of pleasure craft, lucky sod.
