Day 32 - Troglodyte City

Two places to visit today, about 30 kms away are the cliffs above the Dordogne River where for millennium people have been excavatingthe stone and living in cave houses above the river. One of the most beautiful of these villages is La Roque Gageac, one narrow street next to the river then houses and narrow streets up in the cliffs and into the cliffs. A trip on the river in a replica barge is normal and gives you the opportunity to see several chateaus and the town and cliffs. La Roque Gageac is not only pretty but is also dangerous, collapsing cliffs and the flooding of the river make it an interesting place for the inhabitants fortunately it does not happen often.

Then onto the gardens at Marqueyssac just a short drive from the villages, it is one of the chateaus you can see from the river trip however it’s main claim to fame are the walks and surroundings. It sits on top of a ridge overlooking the Dordogne and the walk around the gardens from end to the other is two to three kms so it takes time as some is climbing and there are many steps, but the main look out, le Belvedere, is well worth the walk. The views are spectacular and in particular Le Roque Gageac
