Trip to Mont St Michel, looking forward to this however the weather was grey and damp, the night before when we went into St Malo the sun was out but today not to be seen. We had been told by the lady of the house that Mont St Michel had been closed the day before for the Tour De France start but apart from decorations of the bicycle variety there was no sign of the Tour.
There are four ways to get to the Mont, horse and carriage, bus, walk along the road or trek over the quicksand and water, I had read the distance was about a kilometres we elected to walk along the road, I think I was lied to it was more two at least, still the rain wasn't bad and it gave us some exercise.
Mont St Michel dates back to 708 when the Bishop of Avranches had a sanctuary built in honour of the archangel then in the 10th century the Benedictines moved in and built an abbey and a town grew around it. After fortifications were built it became impregnable and after many attempts by the English to take it during the Hundred (114) Years War it became a national symbol to the French of resistance.
It seems every place we have visited has slopes and steps this was no exception but again views and the Abbey were spectacular, it is a much larger place than St Michaels Mount in Cornwall and more interesting.
Damn, missed the start
