Limited wireless access, so no blog......... Writing this in Weatherspoons pub across the road from Portman Mansions. We. Arrived the day before yesterday, it being Saturday today, and spent yesterday doing the sales!!!! Then it was onto Peter, David and Percy's for a great meal and conversation. It was really goodto see them all and we are endevouring to catch up again before we leave tomorrow. 😃

Today is Third round FA Cup day so at the moment we are surrounded by Cheltenham Town fans who are in town to see their team play Spurs at White Hart Lane. I think it won't be the last we will see of football fans today.

We are going to the Imperial War Museum today, which is just around the corner from Peter and Davids. After that we are going to pack 😝 then it's off to the theatre tonight to see "The Lion in Winter" with Robert Lindsay and Joanna Lumley, it has great reviews so hopefully will live upto it.

Days 31 to 37 - Wed 27 Dec 2011 - 3 Jan 2012

Welcome back, that's me that is not you guys. I have been quite lax over the last few days, been too busy with the extra features, that's my excuse anyway.

On new years eve we made our pilgrimage to the Ricoh Arena to see Coventry City play Brighton. Not having had a win for many games we were not overly optimistic but surprise, surprise we managed to score two goals to their nil. We went away happy, then it turns out I actually managed to capture both goals on the camera, so I will now bore you all......

Goal number 1 score by McSheffrey after a dazzling run

Sky Blue Sam looking happy......

and the second by Lukas Jutkiewicz

After a quiet new year we went for a walk around Allesley Park with some very nice scenery in the crisp morning air

Then in the evening we played Trivial Pursuit with some hellish questions but as usual Penny and I overcame the opposition, but the highlight was a game called "Off Balance" or maybe "On Balance" Alan and I cannot remember which.  But it's a great game and involves building a structure by placing wooded sticks on other wooden sticks without breaking the building. So Alan, Matt and I commenced building....

Alan fails..........

Me putting on the winning piece to create a two rotor helicoptor.... awesome

Yesterday, 2nd Jan, was a bank holiday here in the UK so everybody was off work, at least those we were concerned with.

In the morning another walk ensued, this time around the Memorial Park. This is a large park that was opened in 1920 as a fitting memorial to the fallen of Coventry in the First World War. It was purchased by the city for £13,000 and a tower built from marble which contained the actual Roll of Honour. It has been an integral part of the city since then. It had tennis courts, cafes and Par 3 Golf Course and I remember frequented it as a kid and had some great times.

latest hire car , intact wings

In the afternoon it was on to the Tamworth Ski Centre. The main purpose was for Matt to ski and Lillia and Penny to play in the snow.

He did, they did and a good time was had by all.

Day 31 - Wed 28 Dec 2011 - Cloughjordan to Coventry

After the fun of the previous night we packed our bags, picked up our tents and left for Shannon Airport.

Before that we had some hail and a last visit from robin.

When we got to Shannon, very easy to get to for John now the motorway goes through ( for would be visitors always try for Shannon rather than Dublin), and we had said our goodbyes we went through to the gate we were surrounded by US Marines who were on their way back from Afganistan. They all looked very young and very glad to be going home for new year.

Last view of Ireland

Despite the strong winds we landed with no problems..

We picked up the hire car and drove to Sue and Alan's. When we got there it turns out that we were booked to go out to dinner with Matt and Jen, and as you can see a good time was had by all.....

Day 30 - Tues 27 Dec 2011 - Cloughjordan

Last full day in Ireland and after Christmas a good time for a walk so we set off for the Portumna Forest Park, a great place to stroll among the trees.

Then it back to Distillery Cottage for some more pictures...

There was a lot of hard work put in over Christmas but none more so than Carrie, John, Penny, Lily and Avi. It was not all cooking though and the fruits of their labours was made evident in the evening when we were privy to the one and only performance of the Cloughjordan Riverdance team..

Day 29 - Mon 26 Dec 2011 - St Stephen's Day

What a varied day of different events. The Ormond Hunt was due to assemble in the village at 11:30am for the traditional St Stephen's day Hunt. Then in the late afternoon we were to reconvene at Clashnevin to polish off the food from yesterday plus the trifle that Carrie made on the day. This is after the arrival home of the LS Interlude, that's Lily's Ship, from the harbour at Dromineer on Lough Derg, behind a tractor driven by young Stanley.

Great occasion, thanks to Stan and Lily for hosting, to Lily for the wonderful decoration and table. To all the chefs, Lily, Avril, Penny, Peter and especially Carrie, who spent long hours in the kitchen and made many trips to the store...... and John, Carrie's rock!

Day 24 - Wed 21 Dec 2011 - Cloughjordan

Another quiet day, for Carrie and Penny though it was cook the turkey test day. The turkeys for the bash on Christmas Day will be done in the Wilde kitchen so a preview was in order.

Day 23 - Tues 20 Dec 2011 - Cloughjordan

First full day in Cloughjordan, weather cloudy and a little wet. A quiet day with the prospect of a Carol Service at the local church organised by the local National School of which John is on the board.

I'll try and put some video up but have to watch the images because of the children as it goes up to YouTube.

Cloughjordan National School No 1 Board member Mr John Wilde and his lovely wife Carrie about to leave for the Carol Service.

We finished the night at Maura Grace's bar in the main street........... known to some of you!

Day 22 - Mon 19 Dec 2011 - Coventry to Ireland

More packing and preparation for Ireland. Drive to Birmingham Airport to drop the slightly damaged hire car back to Enterprise and explain that I thought of buying a black felt tip pen and trying to fix the sctratches myself. The guy didn't think it would work so we all had a good laugh....... I was serious though!

Went through to departures for the first look at our Air Aarann aircraft.

What the hell is that! We're used to Airbus A380's or at the very least 737's. An hour and a half in that?

Well, in the end it wasn't too bad and we were in row 6, almost business class.........

anyway, looks bigger from ground level.

For the aviation minded, there was a Boeing 787, the new Dreamliner, parked several bays away, it was in the Boeing colours and had 787 on the tail so was probably there at Shannon on a test flight, couldn't get a photo though.....

Day 21 - Sun 18 Dec 2011 - Worcester

The day started with a heavy frost

We didn't mean to go to Worcester, we actually went looking for a Sunday carvery, there was one on the way to Worcester that we had been too before.

We eventually found one and had lunch, but it was so early we decided to drive onto the cathedral city and see what was happening.

Day 20 - Sat 17 Dec 2011 - Kingsbury Water Park

The Kingsbury Water Park is situated at Sutton Coldfield some miles north of Coventry. The park is part environment/wildlife and recreational. Watching birds, fishing, sailing or picnicing. No picnics today at around 2 degs. Here are some images........

The lake was partially frozen, this bird is standing on it, the next image shows the effect of throwing a small stone into the water....

Day 18 - Thur 15 Dec 2011 - Derbyshire Dales

There was a forecast of snow, and the request was made....

So looking for higher ground we set off for the Derbyshire Dales and snow, plus a suprise!

We drove through a little place called Bakewell, where the tarts come from. We then came across the Lathkill Hotel in Over Haddon. What is the significance you say!

It is the hotel that Penny's mum and dad spent part of their honeymoon in August 1939 and we still have the receipt at home. In those days it was called the Lathkill View Hotel...

We had lunch and a Warm Pimms with apple juice and soaked up the atmosphere..

and this is part of the view

Leaving nostalga behind we went looking for snow, it didn't take long...

the salt gritters were out in force....

 and some winter scenes..

Day 15 - Mon 12 Dec 2011 - Prague

Having lost our travelling companions today, they had to get home to go to work (:-(

Yesterday we did the Red Bus tour so today we decided to hop back on and head up to the copy of the Eiffel Tower they have. it was a cold morning and Peter decided to take Helga with him, and here she is..

One interesting thing though, Peter had lost his new hat, doh....... when we got on the bus the next day, it was the same vehicle and as Penny got on and about to sit down she pointed down and there was the hat.....

The Hat

Having been reunited with the hat we set off on the Red Bus. We got off at the largest sports arena in the world and it was very cold. The Strahov Stadium is the largest in the world, seating 220,000 in concrete stands. Construction was begun in 1926 with various upgrades over the years. It is no longer in general use being only available for the Sparta Prague FC to practise on the 6 fullsize and 2 futsbul pitches inside the stadium. It looks very run down and sad. In 1990, after the Velvet Revolution The Rolling Stones played a free concert here, even then they couldn't fill it and only 100,000 attended.

On the way to Petrin Hill and the Petrin Lookout Tower we passed this student accomodation block, very Stalin like.. wouldn't want to stay in this.

The Petrin Lookout Tower

It is always compared to the Eiffel Tower and although much smaller the Czechs claim that if you add the height of the hill it is slightly taller. There is however a great view over the city....

Again we didn't climb the stairs but paid extra for the lift, which was an experience in itself. It is a coffin like steel device in the centre of the building, it holds 6 including the operator, mind you thats 6 very squeezy people. However once released from the container we went downstairs to find the toilets and found this museum...

Jara Cimrman is a famous Czech who was  renowned for his many talents. He was an inventor, philosopher, sportsman and many other things . He was also an engineer who advised Eiffel on the shape of the legs for his tower. He even had a "girlhood" because his parents didn't tell him he was a boy until he was 6 and until then had been dressed as a girl. In the museum one of his dresses was displayed along with many of his inventions. He never became famous though. Now he has been recognised and indeed was voted the Czechs most famous person. We were intrigued by the exhibition. here is a link if you want to check him out, it's well worth a read, you'll be suprised.

Down the hill we went on the funicular...

Crossed the road at the bottom and found the Savoy Cafe. Founded in 1893 and housed in a beautiful art deco building it's a wonderful place to have coffe and cake, or beer!

The ceiling was boarded over before the Germans invaded in 1938 and was kept covered during the communist era, they didn't want it torn down because of it's decadence. It was finally uncovered and restored after the velvet revolution.

A medium walk up the river followed and we purchased a two hour river cruise and here are some pictures....
